Academic Probation
Students are placed on academic probation when their ASU cumulative GPA drops below good standing as defined by the chart below. Typically, this will be noticeable after your grades are posted at the end of a semester. Notifications are sent to alert students of their status and the requirement that they must meet with an academic advisor.
Students on probation must meet with a SOLS advisor to register, drop/add, or attend courses following being placed on academic probation. Once you have met with one of the SOLS advisors, it is important that you continue to work with the same person while you remain on probation or continuing probation.
Please note that if you are a transfer student, your transfer grades were considered when you were seeking admission to ASU and when deciding which transfer courses could be used to satisfy degree requirements, however they are not computed into your ASU GPA. Only courses completed at ASU are used to compute your ASU semester or cumulative GPA.
To avoid disqualification from the university after you have been placed on academic probation, you must obtain increasingly higher GPAs each semester according to the number of credit hours you have completed based on the following chart:
Hours Minimum Semester GPA
- 24 or fewer credit hours 1.60 minimum GPA for semester
- 25 – 55 credit hours 1.75 minimum GPA for semester
- 56 – 86 credit hours 2.00 minimum GPA for semester
- 87 – 100 credit hours 2.10 minimum GPA for semester
- 101 – 115 credit hours 2.20 minimum GPA for semester
- 116 or more credit hours 2.30 minimum GPA for semester
The continuous increase in required semester GPA for students on academic probation reflects the difficulty in raising cumulative GPA as you accumulate a greater number of credits. You can compute your semester GPA by using the following website: http://uc.asu.edu/advising/gpa.html
You may remain at ASU on continuing probation as long as you:
- Meet your semester GPA goals.
- Meet with your academic advisor.
and
- Follow the plan set forth in the Student-Advisor Contract.
If you fail to meet these requirements, you will be disqualified from the university. If you are disqualified, you must seek reinstatement and readmission before you will be allowed to return to classes at ASU during a regular fall or spring semester, and you must meet with a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences academic advisor for clearance before you will be allowed to register for any ASU summer session.
If you have not yet done so, you may now make an appointment to meet with a SOLS advisor by calling (480) 727-6277 and identifying yourself as a probation student. Once you have met with one of the SOLS advisors, it is important that you continue to work with your assigned advisor. Don’t forget to bring your initialed contract and your DARS with you to your appointment.
