History and Philosophy of Science Philosophers of Science ask about what science is and how it works, while historians study how science changes over time. Traditional philosophical issues of metaphysics, epistemology, and history are all important to understanding the context of science. Historians draw on a range of tools from the humanities and social sciences in exploring science in its contexts. The interdisciplinary field of History and Philosophy of Science examines the Conceptual Foundations of Science and the connections of science to society. ASU offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the History and Philosophy of Science through B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Biology with a Concentration in Biology and Society. In addition, there is undergraduate Certificate in HPS to be taken in conjunction with another B.S. or B.A. degree program. The Program coordinates the Carnap Project and the Embryo Project, and oversees the History of Biology Seminar at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The Program in History and Philosophy of Science is directed by Dr. Richard Creath, Professor of Philosophy and Life Sciences. creath@asu.edu or 480-965-6270
