Ecological Ethics Investigation of the ethical context of decision-making in ecological research and biodiversity management. Supported by the National Science Foundation. Philosophy of Environmental Policy and Conservation Biology Philosophical analysis of the motives, methods, and aims of conservation biology and the ethical underpinnings of contemporary environmental policy. Intellectual Roots of Conservation and Environmentalism Exploration of the philosophical and historical foundations of conservation/environmentalism, the evolution of environmental ethics and politics, and the conceptual development of environmental sustainability. Contact: Ben Minteer, ben.minteer@asu.edu History of Fire We are uniquely fire creatures on a uniquely fire planet. Contrasting the usual approach to fire as solely a physical phenomenon, our research concentrates on fire as biologically and culturally constructed. All aspects of fire are considered throughout the Earth, including issues of industrial combustion and climate change, although emphasis on pyrotechnologies and urban fire is minor. Environmental History The interaction of peoples and places as viewed through historical scholarship. Topics range across the Earth. Co-offered through the History Department.
