CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD The demand is increasing for clinical laboratory scientists with excellent technical, management, and communication skills who can provide the leadership required to meet the changing needs of the healthcare system. Job opportunities are excellent because of the need for certified clinical laboratory scientists; thus ASU students secure employment soon after graduation. Clinical laboratory scientists work in hospital, physician-office, veterinarian, public-health, and private laboratories and in research institutions and industry. A clinical laboratory scientist may choose to work as a generalist in all areas of a lab or specialize in a particular scientific discipline, i.e., Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, etc. There are a number of opportunities for growth and advancement with appropriate experience and education. Graduates are capable of fulfilling several expanded roles which include laboratory supervisor/manager, educator or consultant to physicians and other healthcare providers. The range of choices of where to work is excellent. You could choose to work in a blood bank helping to ensure the quality of the nation's blood supply. A position in a public health department helping to trace the origin and spread of infectious diseases is another option. Consider using your skills in the Peace Corps setting up laboratories in a third world country. Eventually, you could become the manager of a laboratory or an educator helping to prepare future clinical laboratory scientists. Don't forget about private industry, research, or biotechnology. Your options are practically limitless. As a clinical laboratory scientist, your education provides you with a diverse science background, well developed organizational abilities, and broad technical skills allowing you to reach beyond the traditional clinical laboratory. You are well prepared to contribute to research, biotechnology, and private industry through the development, marketing, and sales of medical instruments, products, and pharmaceuticals. A background in clinical laboratory sciences is valuable for further study in the sciences with medical application or in areas that interface with the medical sciences.
