Conservation Biology: Career Opportunities
There is a broad range of career opportunities in the field of Conservation Biology. Your undergraduate training will provide you with the background and expertise to qualify for many of these jobs, as well as to prepare you for advanced graduate work (which can, in turn, greatly broaden your career options). You should discuss your interests with an academic advisor in Conservation Biology - to ensure that you are properly prepared (i.e., that you take the best suite of elective courses within the major and for College and University breadth requirements and to gain a perspective on the tasks you need to accomplish for a successful job search.
The Conservation Biology major maintains an active internship program with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. A variety of positions are usually available full time during summers at sites throughout Arizona. We are normally contacted by the AZGF Human Resources Office to initiate the application procedure in January of each year, with applications due in February. Please check the Conservation Biology bulletin boards outside LSC 286 and LSA 212 for details at that time.
In addition, a number of other agencies and non-government organizations offer
internships in conservation biology and we are currently working to foster new synergies with many
groups. Check the web links below, or on the Favorite Links page.
SOLS Student Services/ Academic Advising office (LSC206) has a dedicated
Internship coordinator, Ms. Shelli Veal , who has additional information on available internships
and how to apply.
Field Courses at Biological Stations and Foreign Course Opportunities
Another way to expand your horizon is to take some of your elective courses at one of the many field stations found in the US and abroad. The Organization of Biological Field Stations lists comprehensively most of the field stations operating in the US and Canada, and also some foreign programs. ASU also has an active Study Abroad Program, which includes environmentally-oriented courses in Mexico and Ecuador.
