Conservation Biology
Central Arizona Chapter, Society for Conservation Biology

The Society for Conservation Biology is an organization devoted to developing the scientific and technical means for the protection, maintenance, and restoration of life on this planet - its species, its ecological and evolutionary processes, and its particular and total environment. In the service of this goal, the SCB's objectives include: 1) promotion of research and the maintenance of the highest standards of quality and ethics in this activity; 2) the publication and dissemination of scientific, technical, and management information; 3) the encouragement of communication and collaboration between conservation biology and other disciplines; and 4) the education, at all levels, of the public, of biologists, and of managers, in the principles of conservation biology.

The objectives of the Central Arizona Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology include supporting the goals of the SCB. The CACSCB also encourages an interdisciplinary approach to conservation and the development of valuable professional skills through volunteer opportunities. CACSCB desires to promote a local forum for awareness and involvement in important conservation issues.

CACSCB is centered at Arizona State University, but in addition to being a student-run organization, it desires to be inclusive of the conservation professionals and lay public in the Valley of the Sun.

Events for Spring 2008

The Spring ’08 schedule of events for the Central Arizona Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology is now available. In continuation with the plan initiated last semester, we will be volunteering for local conservation projects, holding one or more lectures from professionals in the field, and other various activities.

Beginning this semester, CACSCB have opened our own, new website. The website provides a professional means for any club member, ASU student or not, to access photographs and forums for carpooling and general communication between officers and members.

http://geocities.com/cacscb/

We encourage all of you to post questions, suggestions and concerns on the forum. CACSCB has room to grow, and it only takes a few great ideas to make a difference.

Sincerely,

Your CACSCB Officers

31 January

Join us on Hayden Lawn from 10am to 3pm to support Focus the Nation at ASU. Help table with your CACSCB in support of ASU’s call for action. Student groups, businesses, entertainment and interactive activities will be there. Take the opportunity to network with other local groups and organizations while supporting the discussion of conservation and environmental issues.

2 February

We will volunteer for the Arizona Game and Fish Department Pronghorn Project in Prescott Valley. We will meet early Saturday morning and carpool up to the meeting site before joining Les Bell and his team in constructing fences for the local area. The fences will later be used to aid in the relocation of the pronghorn to a more suitable location. Be prepared for strenuous work, but also a chance to protect our Arizona pronghorn population for the future.

23 February

Fountain grass is an invasive species in need of management up at Bartlett Lake. VoAZ is organizing a volunteer opportunity to assist in the grass removal and CACSCB will be joining them. If you would like to join us, it will be necessary to sign up individually on https://www.voaz.org/eventscalendar.aspx. More details will be posted as necessary.

5 March

Dr. Ben Minteer, ASU professor interested in scientific ethics, will be giving a lecture on “ecological ethics.” Minteer will discuss ethical issues surrounding ecological research and biodiversity management, such as the conflict between animal welfare and conservation values in biological research. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn what your ASU faculty members are currently researching and to ask your questions up close and personal.

21-22 March

We will be joining the Black Footed Ferret Team up in Seligman for a spotlighting event, yet again. Those of you who volunteered with CACSCB last semester knows that it is exhausting, but also a valuable experience. We will meet in the afternoon on Friday and arrive back in the afternoon on Saturday. Be prepared to bring warm clothing and flashlights. 4-wheel drive vehicles are appreciated.

9 April

Numerous feature films and television shows have been produced and become popular over time for their comedy and discussion of environmental issues. Clips from particular movies of interest have been collected and edited into an inspiring and entertaining piece by Jamie Alcumbrac and Karl Barton. The film will be shown especially for CACSCB members and friends. Enjoy!

12 April

As if we hadn’t planned enough fun outings already, we will tour the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, located approximately 45 minutes from ASU. Take a breather and enjoy an afternoon away from studying and the fast lane of the real world. For carpooling and other details, keep an eye out.

22 April

CACSCB will be tabling for Earth Day @ ASU with Liberty Wildlife and fellow ASU clubs. Help man the tables, enjoy the activities and see LIVE ANIMALS from Liberty Wildlife’s education department. Stop by and support ASU as we motivate the public towards aiding conservation and environmental issues locally and globally.

29 April

Officer Elections for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 academic year will be held at the “End of the Semester” Barbeque at Daley Park. Officer positions will be open to any ASU student who is also an SCB, the parent society, member. All CACSCB members and friends are welcome to attend and are asked to bring a side dish of your choice. Veggieburgers, hamburgers and all the fixin’s will be provided. Use this opportunity to network and have some fun!
