![]() SUMMER 2006 NEWS FROM THE FACILITIES OFFICE Jon Harrison: One of the constant refrains heard by the facilities staff is “I didn’t know that!” concerning SOLS physical resources and services. We are all busy and try to spend as little time as possible on non-essential work, so this is understandable. Nonetheless, since I started this job a year ago, I have learned that there are many services and resources provided by ASU, SOLS, and the Facilities office that I didn’t know about. Some of these represent opportunities to expand research (e.g. a common-use tissue culture facility maintained by SOLS) and others represent important expenses of the state budget and the indirect costs from our grants that support our research and the start-up costs of bringing new research and teaching programs on-line. The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight the recent activities of the facilities office, to educate you all just a bit on SOLS facilities issues, and point you toward the new SOLS facilities website as a resource for answering your facilities-related questions. A. Completed moves/arrivals The last year has seen a tremendous number of faculty arrivals and moves, and these are continuing. In case you are looking for someone, here’s an update/summary of the major projects/moves/arrivals. Each of these moves requires a significant, often large amount of work. We should especially thank Barbara Markley for overseeing all renovations and coordinating all moves. Rick Olson works closely with major equipment moves and movers, and Judy Swartz has coordinated keys and helped with phones and data connections. Please take a moment to thank these individuals in the facilities office for all their hard work!
B. Departures: Marty Anderies moved to the School of Human Evolution and Social Change Sue Bertram moved to Carleton, University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Amanda Walmsley moved to Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. C. Imminent moves/arrivals/projects scheduled for summer 2006
D. Facilities Web Page Development
Barb Hoffman: A Facilities web page Facilities Web Link has been developed that contains information to help understand all the resources available from this office. Click on the Facilities link on the left menu of the SoLS main page or find Facilities on the drop down menus at the top (Faculty or Staff Resources) to enter our site. The links below will show up on the left menu. Facilities Office The facilities office link gives an overview of services we offer. Facilities Personnel The Personnel link lists staff and their individual duties. Request Assistance The Request Assistance link will pull up on-line forms such as AV request and General Facilities requests (non-emergency). The general facilities request can be for any building or lab issue such as ceiling tile replacement, paper towels, etc. Emergencies such as water leaks should be called to Judy Swartz at 727-6004 or if she is unavailable to Rick Olson at 965-5087 or Barbara Markley at 965-3575. Emergencies that are life threatening, such as fire or illness, please call 911. For Chemical spills or unusual odors from labs, please call ASU Environmental Health Services at 965-1823. Policies The Policies link will show PDF files regarding different policies such as space guidelines, bicycle policy and the 3-year renovation policy. Common-Use Resources The Common-Use Resources, which are owned and maintained by SOLS, are listed with contact names and locations. Please take advance of these resources, which include autoclaves, centrifuges, freezers, walk-in cold rooms, ice machines, purified water, truck, walk-in environmental rooms, plant tissue culture facility, reach-in environmental cabinets, greenhouse and courtyard. Recycling Locations The Recycling link will indicate the locations of all the recycling bins and give information on the program.
