Scientific Imaging

Mr. Kazilek is involved with scientific data acquisition and presentation. He currently manages the Life Sciences Visualization Group and has research interests in biological imaging. These two areas are closely linked by the use of computer systems using both personal computers and high-end computer graphic workstations in tandem with various light microscopy instruments and techniques.

The Visualization Group includes the Visualization Laboratory that works specifically on facilitating educational and scholarly presentation of scientific data. The Group also includes the W. M. Keck Bioimaging Laboratory that houses two scanning laser confocal microscopes, a ratio imaging / general morphometric analysis microscopes, an Atomic Force Microscope, Storm PhosphorImager, and various video microscopes. Images acquired using the microscopes are analyzed on Linux and Windows graphics workstations using both 2-D and 3-D analysis software programs.

In addition to biological imaging, Mr. Kazilek is involved with educational outreach programs. He is the creator and developer of Ask a Biologistand the co-developer of The Paper Project. He is also an artist that works in both the real and virtual world of visual arts. To see more of his alter ego you can visit his his personal web page.
