Systematic and Environmental Herpetology

Dr. Fouquette maintains an interest in anuran vocalization studies, and this has been the subject of most of his research. The male advertisement call serves as a means of species recognition by other anurans as well as by researchers, and sometimes sympatric species are discovered where morphology is similar but the call is distinctly different. Reproductive character displacement may also be recognized through comparison of calls of closely related species in allopatry and sympatry.

Another interest is anuran sperm morphlogy. A survey of the order has been undertaken, comparing sperm structure, using light microscopy, of over 300 species from all but one small family of frogs. Even at this relatively gross level, it is clear that spermatology agrees with other taxonomic characters in most families. However, there are some interesting examples where sperm comparisons suggest somewhat different relationships than conventional characters.

Dr. Fouquette has supervised graduate studies on several aspects of systematics and ecology of various amphibians and reptiles.
