Biological Oceanography, Biogeochemistry, Astrobiology

My main research interests are in the areas of oceanic biogeochemistry, especially the transport of particles and elements from surface water to the deep ocean. This includes the satellite remote sensing of the seasonal and temporal distribution of phytoplankton biomass and productivity in the ocean. I am also working in the field of marine plankton ecology, mainly by investigating model systems of trophic interactions in the laboratory. Most of my research in the past has been ship based; I have participated in 20+ cruises, five of which as chief scientist. Recently, I have added Astrobiology to my research interests, and have collaborated with planetary geologists at ASU in assessing the astrobiological potential of Europa, one of Jupiter's icy moons that might have a vast ocean underneath its icy shell. This research has led me to the Arctic, and we are working with isolated Arctic sea ice organisms in the laboratory.

I teach an Introductory Oceanography class BIO/GLG 325 (see link on the left), Ecology BIO 320 and Ocean Biogeochemistry BIO/GLG/CHM 494/598.
