Arizona State University celebrates Darwin’s 200th birthday and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species with Darwinfest - a creative scientific enterprise.

Research Areas: Genetics, Cellular and Developmental Biology

The teaching and research activities of the genetics, cellular, and developmental biology faculty are concerned with understanding the fundamental molecular events that are at the core of all life. These pursuits cover a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, and pathogenesis. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, including plants, arthropods, fish and mammals. Members of the group utilize the full range of contemporary research tools, including electron and confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, computer modeling, bioinformatics, and DNA sequencing, as well as the techniques of modern molecular biology and genetics.

Graduate studies in Genetic, Cellular and Developmental Biology can be conducted under almost any of the degree programs currently offered from (or in conjunction with) the School of Life Sciences; most graduate students are currently enrolled in the Molecular and Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology, Biology, Microbiology, Plant Biology programs, depending on their specific area of interest. See individual faculty pages for the specific programs with which each faculty member is associated.

SOLS faculty are associated with a number of centers and institutes at Arizona State University with strong evolutionary focus, including the Center for Evolutionary Functional Genomics, the Center for Biology and Society, the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccines, the Center for Innovations in Medicine, the Center for Social Dynamics and Complexity and the Center for Bioenergy and Photosynthesis.
