Application Process – History in Philosophy & Science
The History in Philosophy & Science Masters of Art (MA)/Ph.D. Program admits one cohort annually for programs of study that begin in the fall semester. The target date for applications is December 15 for students wishing to begin a program of study the following August. There is no guarantee that applications received after December 15 will be reviewed. The History in Philosophy & Science Masters of Art (MA)/Ph.D. Program usually notifies applicants of admissions status no later than the following April 15th. - Initiate an online ASU Graduate Admissions Application through the Graduate College’s web site.
- Complete the “General Information Section.” You will be asked to enter information on universities that you’ve attended, GPAs, and GRE scores.
- Complete the Degree Section.
- Select “Sciences (Life, Natural, Physical & Chemical)” as your degree program category.
- Select “Tempe” as your degree program campus.
- Select appropriate History in Philosophy & Science (Masters of Art (MA)/Ph.D.) as your degree program
- Identify the specific History in Philosophy & Science Program faculty member(s) you are interested in working with. This will ensure that these faculty members see your application and can participate in admissions and funding decisions.
- Arrange for three academic Letters of Recommendation.
- Download and print three copies of the School of Life Sciences Recommendation Form.
- Complete and sign the top portion of each form.
- Give one form to each of the three persons who will be writing your letters of recommendation.
- Ask the letter writers to mail paper copies of both the form and their letters of recommendation to:

- Prepare and upload a Statement of Research Interests and Goals.
- Prepare and upload a current Curriculum Vitae or Resume.
- Prepare and upload the School of Life Sciences Academic Record Form. (Word format)
- Submit the online ASU Graduate Admissions Application.
- Pay the Application Fee.
- Have universities mail official, paper transcripts to ASU.
- Send one transcript from each college or university you have attended to:

- Have ETS (Educational Testing Service) provide ASU with official GRE scores. The ETS Institutional Code for ASU is 4007. Enter the Department Code as 0000.
International Students: Students applying from outside of the U.S. will need to submit additional documents. Students from countries whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency with acceptable scores on the TOEFL or IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS scores must be current, with the test date within two years of the first day of classes of the semester you enroll at ASU. Students who wish to attend ASU while holding a student visa (F–1 or J–1) will need to submit a Financial Guarantee Form to:
