Computational Biology

The disciplines of the life sciences are rapidly requiring more mathematical and computational analyses than have typically been employed. While some mathematical approaches have been applied to biological questions for many years, the advance in computational capability has increased the pace of bioscience research to unprecedented levels of speed, precision and detail, and thus dramatically transformed the kinds of problems tackled.

The computational biosciences area offers a Professional Masters Degree in Computational Biosciences and two concentrations in computational biosciences as part of Ph.D. program in Molecular and Cellular Biology Ph.D. degree, or as part of the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics.

The concentration in computation biosciences offered through the MCB Ph.D. is designed to enable graduate students to transition immediately into the bioinformatics and biological workforce with both technical and life skills in computational biosciences. The program is designed to parallel the complementary Ph.D. in Mathematics with a concentration in Computational Biosciences (BBS). Students will choose the concentration through the Molecular Cellular Biology Ph.D. if their background is founded in the life sciences and they wish to emphasize life science based coursework and research during their doctoral training.
