Faculty Mentor
Guidelines for Faculty Mentors
Thank you for agreeing to mentor a SOLS Undergraduate student in an internship that is taking place outside of a university lab setting. Below are some guidelines to assist you.
Before the Internship Begins:
- Review & Approve Internship Contract- Student’s are required to review and complete documents in the Internship Information packet. Prior to the student's enrollment in the internship, the faculty mentor will meet with the student to discuss and review the Internship Contract, which is developed by the student and their site supervisor. Faculty mentors will ensure that the contract includes a reasonably detailed description of the project, goals, responsibilities, deliverables and evaluation criteria. If the contract meets the faculty mentor’s approval, the contract must be signed and dated. If it does not the faculty mentor must provide the student with feedback and recommendations for what would be relevant and appropriate.
During The Internship
- Meet With The Student – The faculty mentor should schedule a minimum of 2 meetings during the semester to discuss the student’s progress. Meetings should occur midway through the semester, 6-7 weeks after the internship begins, and at the end of the semester. In cases where meetings are not possible, regular contact by other means must be maintained.
- Maintain Contact With The Site Supervisor - The faculty mentor should maintain contact with the site supervisor. Periodic contacts should be made at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the semester. The faculty mentor should review an evaluation of the student intern, from the site supervisor, at the midpoint of the semester and at the end, before the last day of classes or the last day of the internship, whichever comes first. During these meetings the faculty mentor should review the student’s progress on the academic project and to confirm that the goals and objectives of the internship are being met.
- Maintain Contact With The Internship Coordinator: The faculty mentor should maintain contact with the Internship Coordinator to discuss any issues that come up during the internship and to check on the student’s academic progress in the internship “484” class. In this class students are required to:
- Attend class meetings
- Keep a reflective journal
- Complete career related assignments
- Submit time sheets
- Submit Mid & Final Evaluations from Site Supervisor
- Give a class presentation about their internship experience
After the Internship Ends
The faculty mentor will assign a final grade based on the student's academic project, the evaluations from the site supervisor and the student’s progress in the internship “484” class. Grades are due to the Internship Coordinator, for posting, by date established by the Registrar’s each semester.
