LS Computer Support Services

SOFTWARE

Software is available from many sources at ASU. Some is site licensed and free for use by everyone; some has reduced pricing. Some is available as a web service.

Here is a short summary.

Software at ASU

All university owned computers may have the Microsoft Windows Office suite installed. SOLS has not yet adopted the 2007 release due to training requirements and some compatibility concerns (several critical journals still do not accept manuscripts prepared with Word 2007), but it is available on campus and on the Applications Server.

Users may also download and install software from the ASU licensed software download site. The list of available software grows regularly, and varies by your affiliation.

Personally-owned computers

Microsoft Office may be used on personally owned computers as long as you are employed at ASU. The procedure involves several exchanges with a Microsoft web site, charging about $20 (plus shipping) to your credit card, and waiting for delivery of the DVD. You may also purchase Microsoft Office for $65 from the Computer Store, and retain rights to use it after you leave ASU. The other advantage is no waiting.
ASU Bookstore/Computer store. Faculty staff and students may purchase software and computers at the ASU Bookstore/Computer Store with personal funds at an academic discount. This software may be used on personally owned computers. Purchases for departmental use go through the SOLS Business Office and are priced lower but may only be used on ASU-owned computers. Adobe Software may be purchased off the shelf, for personal use, or for departmental use with a bookstore purchase order. The prices are different, please feel free to put in a call to the Helpdesk queue if you are not sure which price list to use.

Citation Software
Endnote XI is now available at the Computer Bookstore for $75 to faculty, students and staff, for OS X or Windows. They have negotiated a very nice price reduction from the former $200 level.

Also consider RefWorks, which is web-based (no files to lose) and free through the ASU Libraries. It has a Write-n-Cite plug-in for Word, Mac or PC.

Applications Server A large number of applications, including Office 2007, Acrobat Pro, SPSS, MATLAB, and more are available on the applications server at https://apps.asu.edu.
