From 1962 until 1978, the LSEMF functioned with one faculty member as the Laboratory Supervisor. This person taught one or more courses (primarily for graduate students and researchers) covering specimen preparation, use of the microscope(s), darkroom work for image preparation, and data presentation. Since 1978 there has been an assistant to the supervisor and then a professional laboratory manager. At present, the supervisor is Associate Professor Dr. Robert W. Roberson and the laboratory manager is David Lowry . Three courses in Biological Electron Microscopy are offered, the schedule commonly being the team taught (Dr. Roberson and Dr. Chandler) Bioimaging lecture which qualifies the student to choose Dr. Roberson's laboratory course in Transmission Electron Microscopy in the Fall Semester, Mr. Lowry's course in Scanning Electron Microscopy in the Spring Semester, and a course in advanced specimen preparation techniques offered by Dr. Roberson as needed. Since the inception of the LSEMF, well over three hundred graduate students, scores of postdoctoral fellows, research scientists and visiting scientists and over forty ASU faculty members from the Life Science Departments have pursued their research programs in the LSEMF. At any one time there may be as many as twenty or more laboratories engaged in some phase of electron microscope aided research, including individuals from related disciplines such as biochemistry, geology, anthropology, psychology and bio-engineering. Laboratory personnel also conduct tours and provide demonstrations to area science clubs and classes from regional middle schools, high schools and community colleges.
