Eli Fenichel

I use theoretical and empirical modeling approaches to understand coupled human-ecological systems. My research focuses on understanding feedbacks between human economic behavior and ecological systems. Humans can have a great influence on ecological processes, but humans also adapt their behavior to changes in ecological structures and processes. Accounting for the way humans are influenced by ecosystems is as important as understanding how humans influence ecosystems for crafting successful ecosystem policy and management. Currently, I am interested in:

  • Bioeconomic models of multi-species systems (e.g., humans-predator-prey, humans-nonhuman host-parasite)
  • Efficient population management when spillover effects are unavoidable
  • The value of information, timing of decisions under uncertainty, and decision theoretic approaches to natural resources management
  • Recreational fishery management and seasonal models of angler behavior
  • Wildlife, fish, and emerging infectious disease dynamics and surveillance
  • Invasive species.
