Research Ethics; History of Technology

Dr. Ellison works in the areas of research ethics, graduate program development, and history of technology. In research ethics, she teaches, conducts research, and contributes to ASU’s research integrity initiatives. For graduate students in the life sciences, she offers a one-credit introductory course on research ethics and one-credit advanced topics courses. Her current research is a collaboration with colleagues from the Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes and the ASU Polytechnic campus to developing curriculum and assess ethics education for science and engineering graduate students. Dr. Ellison is also a member of ASU’s Intellectual Property and Institutional Review Committee and, from 2008-2009, worked with the College of Letters and Sciences to review its procedures for handling violations of ASU’s academic integrity policy and to develop faculty and student resources in this area.

As the executive director for the Biology and Society graduate programs and a founding member of ASU’s interdisciplinary doctoral degree program in the Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology, Dr. Ellison coordinates development of unit-level processes and requirements for the programs.

By training a historian of technology, Dr. Ellison’s areas of interest are the institutional history of American science and technology as well as the history of engineers and engineering in the U.S.

Prior to coming to ASU, Dr. Ellison was the Interim Assistant Dean for Research Policy and Compliance in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Graduate School. Focusing on oversight of research with human subjects and review of potential for conflicts of interest in research, her activities included policy analysis and development, educational resources development, information technology system development, and management of compliance committee business.
