Biological Oceanography, Biogeochemistry, Astrobiology
My main research interest is in the area of ocean biogeochemistry; especially the dynamics of the biological carbon pump, and the role of ocean biota in the carbon export to the deep sea. Most of my research has been ship based; I have participated in 20+ cruises, five of which as chief scientist. My group is also working on several aspects of marine plankton ecology, such as model systems of trophic interactions in the laboratory and molecular based analyses of plankton diversity. More recently, I have added Astrobiology to my research interests, and have collaborated with planetary geologists at ASU in assessing the astrobiological potential of Europa, one of Jupiter’s icy moons that might have a vast ocean underneath its icy shell. This research has led me to the Arctic, and we have investigated diversity of sea ice organisms in Arctic and are working with isolated Arctic sea ice organisms in the laboratory.
I teach an Introductory Oceanography class BIO/GLG 325, Marine Biology BIO 494, Ecology BIO 320 and Ocean Biogeochemistry BIO/GLG/CHM 494/598.
