Goal: Catalyze “new, bold” initiatives to raise the quality, visibility
and impact of the science in SoLS to a higher level and to forge creative and logical
interactions that will help research and training.
How: The Research & Training Initiatives Committee (RTI) will evaluate proposals
requesting seed funds, personnel support, travel, or whatever is appropriate to make
the proposed initiative happen, or at least to get it off to a good start.
Examples (just a few varied ideas; all ideas will be considered!):
- support for a full or partial graduate research assistantship for
a student to work with you in developing a large, complex grant proposal
- pulling together an interdisciplinary group from other institutions
to have a “brainstorming weekend” to lay the groundwork
for a major proposal
- organizing high impact outreach event
- bringing in a speaker or organizing a workshop to bring together
multi- or inter-disciplinary groups within the School or around or beyond campus
- bringing in a person who has experience in running a type of
training grant for which you would like to apply
- asking for committed staff support time to develop new techniques
- seed funding for research supplies and/or personnel to test out a new idea
that –if successful- will lead to a strong research proposal
Procedure: Anyone (faculty, APs, postdocs, grad students, staff)
can apply; the procedure is meant to involve a minimum of red tape. A proposal may come from
multiple people; if so, then one person is designated as coordinator in the proposal, and contacts
will go via this person. For proposals submitted by
postdocs, students and staff a letter of support from their major advisor/mentor or their
supervisor is required. For proposals submitted by research faculty, faculty research associates
or equivalent, a letter of support from a tenure-track faculty member or AP is required. All funded projects will be required to provide a report on the outcome of the funded RTI project.
-
Matching. For each proposal it is requested that responsible faculty
member(s) provide a 1:1 match on RTI funds for the proposed activity. This would generally
come from an IIA account or another suitably flexible account where such charges are
allowable. Individuals without sufficient funds to provide a 1:1 match should indicate the
level that they can provide. The SOLS business office will arrange for activity-related
charges to be split between RTI accounts and the account(s) of the responsible faculty
member(s).
- Size of awards. The maximum award size will be $6K of
RTI funds (that is, up to $12K total). These proposals will be evaluated by the RTI committee
on a monthly basis, targeting the 15th of each month. Proposals for special opportunities
with a short lead time may be dealt with on an ad-hoc basis; adequate justification is
required. Smaller proposals (less than $2K of RTI request) may be submitted at any time.
Submit all proposals to Barb Hoffman (barb.hoffman@asu.edu), preferentially by Email
- Format. As the purposes of the proposals (and therefore
the materials to be included in the application) may be varied, no forms are prescribed.
Please keep your prose to 2 pages or less in easily readable font.
- Content. In the proposal, describe what you want to do and provide a
cost estimate; emphasize the expected longer-range outcome and its importance for SoLS. If
the proposed work is not a clear departure from ongoing or past efforts, describe why other
funding sources cannot be used. If previous funds have been received from the SOLS
Initiatives Program, describe the progress or outcome (mandatory). Each proposal should
indicate both a start date and a date when the expected activity will be completed. Indicate
the level of matching that you can provide (and the relevant account number(s)).
