ASU School of Life Sciences Honey Bee Research Laboratory
Construction is underway on the School of Life Sciences' Honey Bee Research Laboratory located at the ASU Polytechnic campus. The new laboratory will be home to more than one million European honey bees. (Photo of person with the bees is visiting scientist Osman Kaftanoglu). Completion is expected in mid-September 2005. The 7000 square foot facility will house seven SOLS faculty dedicated to honey bee research spanning genetics, behavior, ecology, and physiology. The inside of the laboratory sports a yellow and black design theme. The lab will house 25 colonies of European honey bees. Additional hives will be distributed throughout the valley bring the total to about 200 hives. Each hive can contain up to 50,000 bees. In addition to research, the facility will be used for teaching, and outreach to the hobby and professional beekeeping communities.
