November 23, 2007 –The Frontiers in Life Sciences Workshop: Iridescence: More than Meets the Eye is a School of Life Sciences’ graduate student initiated and organized international conference developed to connect diverse disciplines and researchers around the topic of iridescence. The conference, to be held February 6 – 9, 2008, will include panel discussions, poster presentations, talks and workshops developed to catalyze cross-disciplinary discussion, identify new avenues of research, and explore the potential for iridescence in nature to provide novel insight in materials sciences, science education, and biological discovery. The final evening of the conference incorporates a dinner, a fashion show with student dancers from ASU Herberger College of the Arts choreographed by Jennifer Tsukayama wearing iridescent costumes created by costume artists Galina Mihaleva and Jacqueline Benard, and a talk by Dennita Sewell, curator of costume design at the Phoenix Art Museum, on the use of iridescence in costuming and fashion from traditional ceremonial garb to modern day fashion and textiles.** An international array of speakers is slated, and abstracts have been received from scientists in Brazil, Canada, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, United Kingdom and the United States. The conference presents a unique opportunity for ASU faculty and graduate students to interact with innovative, international leaders in their fields, and build collaborations between departments and disciplines within ASU.
