Clinical Laboratory Sciences

Checksheet 2007-08

The BS degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS), also known as Medical Technology, is designed to prepare individuals for a healthcare profession that serves as a vital partner in medical decision making. The major scientific disciplines studied in clinical laboratory sciences include clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, and microbiology. Clinical Laboratory Scientists perform laboratory analyses utilized by physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor disease; and evaluate the maintenance of an individual’s health. This degree consists of 2 ½ years of university, college, and prerequisite science requirements which are then followed by 1 ½ years (16 months) of clinical laboratory science courses in the nationally accredited CLS Professional Study Program. The Professional Study Program consists of lectures and student laboratory experiences at the university followed by practical experience (clinical rotations) at affiliated clinical laboratories in a hospital, clinic, or private laboratory setting. More than twenty laboratories are affiliated with the ASU CLS Program including Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Sonora-Quest Laboratories, to name a few. This invaluable combination of theory and practice makes ASU graduates highly employable and prepares individuals for a variety of career paths in hospital, physician office, veterinarian, public health, and reference laboratories and in research institutions and industry. Upon completion of the BS degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, the graduate is eligible for national certification by examination. This degree is also valuable for further study in sciences with medical application or in areas that interface with the medical sciences
