Concentration in Genomics and Bioinformatics

Roadmap Link

Checksheet 2007-08

The Concentration in Genomics and Bioinformatics is intended for students interested in a flexible curriculum education focused on modern genome science. This concentration will prepare students for careers in basic and biomedically-oriented research or professional training in the health professions. The requirements include upper division courses in genetics, biochemistry, and computational biology. Elective courses permit students to further focus their education in one or more of these areas. The major in Biological Sciences with a Concentration in Genomics and Bioinformatics consists of a minimum of 40 semester hours in required life science courses, and a minimum of 16 semester hours in related fields, a three-semester-hour statistics course, plus a three-semester-hour advanced mathematics course included in the General Studies Requirement. A minimum grade of “C” (2.00) is required in all course work in the major and related fields. Required courses are as follows:

Core requirements (15 credits):
BIO 187 General Biology (4)
BIO 188 General Biology (4)
BIO 340 General Genetics (4) or BIO 341 Genetic Analysis (5)
BIO 345 Organic Evolution (3)

Concentration requirements (16 hours):
BIO/MBB/MAT 355 Introduction to Computational Molecular Biology or MAT 351 Mathematical Methods for Genetic Analysis (3)
BIO 456 Bioinformatics and Molecular Evolution (3) or BIO 455 Introduction to Comparative Genomics (3)
