PDF, Word Document
Overview
The SOLS Undergraduate internship program for BIO, PLB, MIC, and MBB 484, is designed to provide students with skills and experiences that will assist them in accomplishing their educational and career goals. As such, all internships must be related in some way to their academic major. The goals of the internship program are to provide students with the opportunity to:
- enhance their Undergraduate learning in a professional environment.
- gain professional and scientific experience with current technology by contributing to significant projects.
- build communication, interpersonal, teamwork and other leadership skills critical for the success in the life sciences.
- connect/network with people across the company/industry to learn about career opportunities.
- reflect upon the internship experience and develop a portfolio/resume that displays skills and accomplishments.
Internship Guidelines
An internship experience is one in which the student and the internship provider collaborate to create a meaningful experience that is in line with the student’s major field of study. A student can register for 1-3 credit hours per semester. Students are able to apply a maximum of two (2) outside the classroom type of experiences (i.e. internship, research, individualized instruction etc.) for a TOTAL of 1-6 credit hours towards their major degree requirements. Students cannot be paid while working for academic credit. Internship hours must be completed within the same semester that the student registers for the internship class. All internships must be approved prior to registration. Internships are graded on a pass/fail basis (with the exception of some).
Internship Eligibility Requirements
- Enrolled in a Life Sciences degree program
- 2.0 GPA in major
- Successful completion of at least 45 credit hours
- Department Approval
Types of Internships
Internships offer students the opportunity to explore potential careers doing everything from analytical work in biomedical laboratories, field work in conservation programs to research of agricultural and pharmacological products. Students earn academic credit in a structured supervised professional environment either on campus or off campus.
On Campus Internships
Students can complete an internship on campus under the supervision of a faculty member. The student works with the faculty member to develop meaningful work in a setting, outside of the classroom, that will bridge the gap between theory and practice. To start, students can review faculty profiles, online, to find out which faculty are doing research, have labs, or other activities on campus that are of interest to them. Then, the student can contact the faculty directly to see if they have any openings. The School of Life Science faculty profiles are at http://sols.asu.edu/directory/faculty.php. Other ASU departments and schools maintain similar faculty profiles.
The requirements for an On Campus internship are established between the faculty and the student. To register for an On Campus internship complete the 484 On Campus Internship form. This form must include a detailed project description and the signature of the faculty supervising the internship. Submit the form to the Undergraduate Advising Office for approval prior to registration.
Off Campus Internships
Students can complete an internship off campus at a company, government agency, hospital etc. that provides meaningful, career-related work that extends a student's learning beyond the classroom. During this approved, structured, supervised experience students are required to:
- Work specific # of contact hrs per academic credit to be earned
1 credit= 45 hrs, 2 credits=90 hrs, 3 credits=145 hrs
- Attend Class Meetings
- Maintain Time Record
- Write a Reflective Journal
- Participate in a Mid & Final Performance Evaluation
- Complete Class Presentation or Paper
The Off Campus Internship Information Packet provides the necessary forms that must be read and completed. Upon completion, the student must submit the forms to the Internship Coordinator in the Undergraduate Advising Office, LSC-206, for approval prior to registration.
The following is a List of Internship Providers in and out of state. This list is updated and should be checked periodically. In addition to this list, talk to faculty, other students, family and friends about possible internships. ASU’s Career Services and company websites are other resources as well. The Undergraduate Advising Office has an Internship Coordinator that is available to answer any questions that you may have. Feel free to schedule an appointment with the Internship Coordinator, by calling (480) 727-6277.
