Applications are not being accepted for the 2008-09 academic year for the PreMARC Program.

The Pre-MARC Program at Arizona State University was established in 1998 to increase the participation of students from underrepresented groups in careers related to biomedical research. It is designed to give freshmen and sophomores early exposure to research careers by involving them in the scientific process. PreMARC trainees work hands-on with scientists in a research laboratory, and attend a weekly seminar to gain practical skills in research and explore science as a career.

Biomedical research is broadly defined and includes biology, physics, plant biology, medical anthropology, chemistry, nutrition, mathematics, psychology, biomedical engineering, speech & hearing, microbiology, and exercise science. Freshmen and sophomores who are interested in research in any of these exciting areas should consider applying for this program.

The PreMARC Experience

Appointment as a PreMARC fellow brings many benefits and responsibilities:

• Conduct research and gain hands-on experience in the laboratories of ASU mentors
• Become part of a network of students from ASU interested in science as a career
• Attend a weekly one credit hour class designed specifically for the PreMARC Program
• Attend seminars and interact with outstanding researchers from other institutions; and
• Receive a monthly stipend during the academic year (fall and spring semesters).

Who should apply?

Freshmen and sophomores from underrepresented groups or first-generation college students who wish to explore their interest in the life sciences, mathematics, and biologically based engineering should apply. Native American, Hispanic, and African American students should strongly consider applying for this program. Pre-MARC trainees are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and personal/career objectives.

Pre-MARC trainees are exposed to many opportunities that most undergraduate students typically do not have. It also enhances the education, training, and competitiveness of students interested in continuing into post-graduate academia. Students interested in finding out more about this opportunity should contact the program office.
