SOLUR APPRENTICE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please Read This Information Carefully!

To be eligible for this program you must be enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student at Arizona State University. Although there is not a set GPA requirement for the Apprentice Program, each participating faculty member may set his or her own specific requirements for a project. Please check each project description carefully.

All undergraduates whose interests connect to the life sciences are welcome to apply. Students are not required to be Life Science majors.

Please note that students may only be appointed to one Apprentice position per semester.

HOW DO I APPLY?

  • Read the faculty project descriptions carefully [click here] and choose projects that meet your interests and abilities. Notice that preferred qualifications vary from project to project.
  • Choose no more than two projects to apply for. The maximum number of applications you can submit per semester is two. In instances where faculty advertise multiple projects you only need to make one application but you should indicate which projects you are most interested in.
  • Assemble your application packet
  • A completed application form [click here]. Make sure to write an accurate and legible e-mail address on your application.
  • Your updated resumé.
  • A statement of interest for each project you are applying for. Be sure to explain why are you interested in the project, what relevant knowledge and skills you have, and what you hope to get out of the research experience.
  • A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your interests, goals, and attributes.
  • An unofficial copy of your transcripts. ASU students can go to http://www.asu.edu/sos to print a copy of your transcripts. New or transfer students can attach a copy of unofficial transcript from a high school, community college, or other college.
  • Submit your complete application packet to the Enrichment Program in the Undergraduate Program Office in the School of Life Sciences (LSC 226). Priority deadline is Monday, August 13, 2007 for Fall 2007 and Monday, January 7, 2008, for Spring 2008. Applications received after the priority deadline and during the first week of classes will be considered on a case by case basis.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

  • Each application will be screened initially by the SOLUR staff and then delivered to the identified faculty mentor for their review.  The number of paid Apprentice positions is limited each semester to approximately 15, depending on available funding.
  • Please check your e-mail on a regular basis. You will be contacted by email either by the faculty member or staff from the School of Life Sciences Enrichment Program. The email will contain information for you to set up an interview with the faculty member.
  • Please do not telephone faculty unless you are instructed to do so by an email. Please understand that faculty list Apprentice positions so that they can receive assistance in collecting applications and notifying students of their application status. For most faculty, the first two weeks of each semester is a busy time for getting new classes started. Please work with the staff in Enrichment Programs if you have questions.
  • Schedule an interview with the prospective faculty mentor as soon as you are invited to do so.

WHAT IF I AM SELECTED?

  • Submit a completed Student/Mentor Commitment form to the Enrichment Program Office. The faculty member will have a copy of the form.
  • Sign up for the SOLUR Seminar (BIO 294). This is a required course for all SOLUR participants including Apprentices. The Enrichment Program Office will provide the information you need and assist you with adding the course.
  • Submit a New Employee Hiring packet to Human Resources if you have not worked on the ASU campus within the past 12 months.
  • If you would like to receive course credit for your experience, obtain a BIO 310 Course Contract Form from the School of Life Sciences Advising Office in LSC 206. They will provide instructions for completing the form with your mentor.  Please note: you cannot receive a wage and course credit for the same hours.
  •

WHAT IF I AM NOT SELECTED?

You will receive an e-mail notification stating that you were not selected. Re-apply another semester when a position that interests you is posted. Check the postings each semester as old ones may reopen and new ones may be added. Keep in mind that a large number of students may apply for one position. It takes experience and practice learning how to present your skills and assets. Sign up for a workshop to get more information on the program and get tips on making clear and effective applications.

How do I get more information?

You are always welcome to drop in at the Enrichment Program Office (LSC 226) to get specific questions answered or send an email to solsep@asu.edu.
