Undergraduate Student Services & Academic Advising

Dear SOLS Student:

Effective Spring 2008 semester, the Undergraduate Advising Office is changing the way students are to be advised. In the past, advising was done by appointment Monday through Thursday, and walk-in appointments ,were available on a first come, first served basis. This system will no longer be in effect, with the exception of the first two weeks of every semester. You must now schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor.

Under the new system, advisors will only see students based on the alphabet. Please see the chart below to determine your assigned advisor. Students will remain with their assigned advisor until they either graduate or leave the program.

  • A – CH: Bettie Julkes
  • CI – F: Phillip Scharf
  • G – K: Cheri Peterson
  • L – N: Fidel Torres
  • O – SH: Shelli Veal
  • SI – Z: Latricia Lombard

When scheduling an appointment with your assigned advisor, please call (480) 727-6277. Be prepared to give the appointment maker your 10 digit affiliate ASU ID (starting with something like 1000 or 1200), your major, and the reason for your advising appointment. If you schedule an appointment, please keep it and be on time, or call to cancel and reschedule. If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, you must reschedule.

During the first two weeks of each semester there will be NO scheduled appointments. Students will be seen on a first-come, first serve, walk-in basis.

Before you meet with your advisor, you must prepare for your appointment by running and printing out a current DARS report. Review the DARS and write down all of your questions so you don’t forget them. Bring those questions and your DARS report to your appointment. Show up for your appointment on time and ready to work with your advisor so that they can better serve you. You can access your DARS report at ASU Interactive – http://asu.edu/interactive - Under “Current Students” click on “Academic Record Information,” select Request/View Degree Audit (DARS) and follow the directions. Also, don’t forget to select “Open All Sections” and “Printable Copy” before printing your DARS.

Our primary goal is to enhance the experience of the students in our College, and to maintain a high retention and graduation rate for all undergraduates in the Life Sciences. A key to student success frequent and accurate guidance with respect to degree requirements, what classes to take and when to take them, career opportunities, and other matters. We take great pride in making certain that our students meet often with advisors who can provide them with the information and guidance needed to make appropriate academic choices. We think of it as a "continuous interaction" that starts as early as the first term of study for our freshmen. We invite each member of our incoming class to take BIO 194 Freshman Seminar, to assist our students in making a smooth transition to a community of active learners.
