Plant Biology Undergraduate Studies

Students majoring in Plant Biology have two options open to them, depending on their interests. They can elect to earn a degree in Plant Biology, as a general area of study, or with a more focused curriculum described by one of the two Concentrations within Plant Biology:

  • Environmental Science and Ecology
Programs that express a broad-scale vision of environmental studies exist at many levels within ASU. This Concentration provides a focused positioned to provide the framework of a program that deals with environmental aspects of natural and human dominated ecosystems.
  • Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Major advances have occurred recently in understanding biochemical, molecular, and cellular aspects of plants. This Concentration was developed to provide training in these areas at the undergraduate level.

These Concentrations focus on different career goals and offer programs that provide training in how to deal with major challenges that face society. Although each program track in plant biology has a different set of required courses, foundational courses in chemistry, general biology and math are required for all. Other courses such as Cell Biology, Plant Physiology, Plant Anatomy, and Fundamentals of Ecology, may be required for the different Concentrations within the major. Opportunities are available for students to take advanced courses in biochemistry, microbiology, and bioengineering, in other departments.

Students who choose to major in Plant Biology will have the opportunity to indicate a Concentration, which will appear on their transcript.

Microbiology Undergraduate Studies

The Microbiology major offers one undergraduate degree program:

Clinical Laboratory Sciences Undergraduate Studies

The Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences includes a professional component.

The Clinical Laboratory Sciences Professional Study Program at A.S.U. is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Completion of the Program and a baccalaureate degree will qualify the graduate to take national certification exams. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certifying examinations administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, certification as MT(ASCP), and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, certification as CLS(NCA).
