What is Undergraduate Research in the
School of Life Sciences?

Undergraduate research is an educational activity where undergraduate students:

  • Work collaboratively with a faculty mentor/graduate students BY
  • Participating in hands-on, minds-on inquiry experiences IN ORDER TO
  • Create and share new knowledge.

Undergraduate research is one way that students can enrich their learning experience at Arizona State University. Enrichment occurs as students apply knowledge they have learned in classrooms and through life experiences while engaged in research to address new questions and problems in the Life Sciences.

When engaged in undergraduate research, students work with a faculty mentor and participate in hands-on, minds-on experiences that encourage the systematic exploration and discovery of knowledge. They may work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and peer undergraduate researchers and have access to state-of-the art-research equipment and materials. As a completion step in the research process, undergraduate researchers are encouraged to participate in public presentation of their work.

Undergraduate researchers can choose to explore Life Science interests in biomedicine and biotechnology, cellular and molecular biosciences, genomics and bioinformatics, ecology and environmental science, the human dimensions of biology, and organismal, integrative and biological systems. Students are also encouraged to think and make connections to a variety of other disciplines, including (but not limited to): chemistry and biochemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, psychology, anthropology, kinesiology, philosophy, communications, and geosciences.

Administrators in the School of Life Sciences Undergraduate Enrichment Programs office (LSC 226) can help facilitate research experiences for undergraduates with ASU faculty members in the Life Sciences and connected disciplines. Administrators provide assistance to students seeking opportunities to get involved in research and assist faculty in the Life Sciences and connected fields who wish to include undergraduates in their research programs.
