Welcome to Ottmar*, the Life Sciences large format printer. Here you will find instructions on creating large format posters as well as information on fees and turn–around times.

Large Format Printing in a Nutshell

Guidelines and Technical Specifications that MUST be adhered to except where otherwise specified:

  • We strongly advise that the final submission of your poster be in the form of a Powerpoint file we have the most success with Powerpoint files. Read our FAQs for a list of other acceptable (but possibly problematic) file formats.
  • Bitmap images should be a minimum of 100 dpi at 100%. TIP: Zoom in to 100% on your imported images to get a better idea of their quality when they are printed at full size.
  • Use common fonts. For example, Arial (sans–serif) or Times New Roman (serif).
  • Posters must be no wider than 59" in one direction.
  • Powerpoint file pages must be under 53" in one direction (see FAQ for explanation).
  • So how would I make a poster that is 40" X 60" or even longer?
    • You must scale down your poster. For instance, if you wanted your poster to be 40" X 60" you could create a poster that is 35" X 52.5" (20" X 30" would work too). Remember to specify final dimensions on the work order form.
    • NOTE: If we have to scale your poster up 10% at printing, you will have to scale up the resolution of your bitmap images by 10% (the image will have to be 110 dpi). Scaling Calculator
  • Fill out a Vislab Work Order. NOTE: For payment through Accont/Grant number, the work order must be signed by an official account signer.
  • Read our FAQs.

Why did we name it "Ottmar"?

Ottmar is named in honor of Ottmar Mergenthaler, inventor of the linotype. This early typesetting machine represented a significant advance over existing typesetting methods which involved individually placing each piece of type, in that it allowed users to set an entire line of text in metal type at once.
