The ASU School of Life Sciences Master of Science in Biology, Coursework & Capstone option is a flexible program designed to prepare you to be competitive in a changing job market. You'll craft an individualized study program that samples from a wide diversity of courses taught by global experts, and then delve more deeply into your own area of interest by completing a capstone project.

Degree Overview

The Master of Science in biology offers students with a sense of adventure a place to explore the life sciences through multiple lenses. With direct access to more than 100 faculty scientists working in more than a dozen exciting research areas, you'll be able to explore broadly while also crafting a science niche of your very own.

The Master of Science in biology Coursework & Capstone option admits students throughout the year into both the regular and accelerated BS/MS programs. In preparing your personal statement, please describe your primary areas of interest in the life sciences and explain why the Coursework & Capstone option is the right choice for you.

Application Deadline

Applications are accepted year-round for admissions in Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Desired qualifications
  • undergraduate GPA minimum 3.0 (on 4.0 scale)
  • international students: TOEFL score of 100, or IELTS score of 6.5
  • undergraduate degree in the life sciences

Curriculum

The Master of Science in biology program supports learning in your specific area of interest. You'll work with advisors and mentors to develop a program of study that includes the required coursework but also focuses on your particular study area. To complete the program, you will be required to complete a capstone project in which you write a paper and give a public lecture in which you use the latest research to answer an important question in the life sciences, followed by an evaluation by your committee.

With a flexible curriculum, you will be able to create an adaptable and general master's degree that encompasses both traditional and interdisciplinary approaches in any area of biology. You'll take three core courses, electives, and complete a capstone experience. Because our program is adaptable, you may choose from electives in areas that are outside of biology. 30 credits are required.
