Garcia was the first in her entire family to graduate with a Master's degree. Since a very young age, Garcia knew she was going to attend college and obtain not only a Bachelor's degree but her goal was to obtain a Masters. With lots of sacrifices, Garcia worked up to two jobs while attending College. As a first-generation student, she did not know exactly how to apply to a 4-year institution nor her parents, with very little guidance, she somehow figured it out and she applied to Cal State Fullerton (CSUF). Garcia got accepted to CSUF majoring in Spanish Literature & Linguistics and obtained multiple grants which helped her complete her B.A and M.A.
Cal State Fullerton was Marlene's second home she grew up as a person and as a professional. Marlene joined multiple cultural clubs, for example, she was part of the Ballet Folkloric of CSUF dancing to multiple cultural Mexican regions. She works as a student assistant and eventually after graduating with her B.A she started working in the advising center as a Front Desk Service Center Staff, while working on her M.A. Garcia learned so much from the advising team and that is when she knew she was meant to be an advisor. After working a few years in the center at the front desk she took the initiative to shadow advisors and to work directly with them to gain experience. After graduating with her M.A she started applying to multiple advising jobs and ASU gave her the opportunity to expand her professional successes. Here she is now trying to make a difference and most importantly helping students reach their goals.
