Biography

Misra is a microbial geneticist who studies how proteins, synthesized in the cytoplasm, are targeted to the bacterial outer membrane. His research focuses on a particular class of outer membrane proteins that form beta-barrels and mediate solute transport and protein assembly. A central component of the assembly machinery is conserved in all Gram-negative bacteria and in mitochondria and chloroplasts of eukaryotes, the two organelles of bacterial origin.

A second project in his laboratory examines the mechanism of drug resistance, with an emphasis on the major multi-drug efflux pump system of clinical relevance. His research employs classical genetics and molecular biology approaches to investigate membrane biology and drug resistance.
