Biography

I grew up in a coastal town in
Venezuela where I witnessed first-hand the importance of ocean
preservation. As in any coastal community, and especially in a
developing country, ocean health directly impacts people’s
livelihood, health, and enjoyment. In my quest to become a marine
ecologist, I obtained a B.S. in Biology (with a music minor) from
Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago, IL) and did a year of
post-baccalaureate research in marine ecology at the University of
Chicago. I also volunteered for ten years at the John G. Shedd
Aquarium’s Marine Mammals and Education Departments.

Research Interests

I am generally interested in the
study of cetacean ecology. Currently, I am studying aspects of the
biology and behavior of cetacean reproduction and foraging
activities. By combining my music and scientific skills I seek to
better understand cetacean acoustics and communication, and how
these relate to reproductive behavior (e.g. whale singing behavior
in humpbacks). I am also interested in the study of marine food
webs, and the importance that cetaceans have on top-down effects as
well as the implications for commercially important marine species.

Marine mammals represent a
unique link between land and sea because of our shared anatomy, long
life-spans, and susceptibility to disease-causing agents found in
marine resources we consume, and therefore serve as sentinel species
for ecosystem risk assessment/management and human health. As part
of my work, I aspire to contribute to bridge the gap between science
and policy in an effort to increase public awareness and
conservation of these important marine creatures.
