ROSeY TEACHing Tier System

teacher and student

Teaching Efficiency and Awareness with Course Hierarchies (TEACH) with four (4) TEACHing Tiers (ROSeY) for degree programs.

Courses within the SOLS B.S. degree programs have been categorically framed into a situational awareness Teaching Efficiency and Awareness with Course Hierarchies (TEACH) system with four (4) TEACHing Tiers (ROSeY) that prioritize our degree program curricula. This TEACHing Tier system ensures that SOLS meets the instructional and curricular needs of its undergraduate degree programs and provides students with courses that ensure academic progress toward their B.S. degree.

Courses are color-coded based on their assigned teaching tier.

Course modifications and new course proposals

ASU student in classroom

Course modifications include changes to pre-requisites, co-requisites or anti-requisites, course descriptions, credit hours or teaching modality. To start a proposal for a course modification, please complete the course modification form:

New courses always start as a special topics course. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Special topics courses cannot have pre-requisites
  • A note can be added about recommended pre-reqs, but cannot be enforced
  • Special topics can only be combined with courses of the same level (300-level to 300-level), with the exception of 494/591 and 498/598.

Courses must be offered at least twice within 3 years and must have more than 10 students enrolled for two terms before the course can be reviewed for a permanent number. SOLS also considers the following before proposing a new permanent course:

  • How will this course fit into the existing undergraduate degree curriculum?
  • How does this course differ from currently offered courses?
  • What is the long-term plan for offering this course?
  • Are there other faculty who can teach this course?

To start a proposal for a new course or course modification, please complete the appropriate form located with the Course and Curricular Deadlines.

The proposal forms linked below must be submitted one year in advance of the offering as the proposals have four levels of approval:

  • SOLS
  • The College (and EdPlus for an online modality)
  • Provost’s Office
  • Registrar’s Office

Please be sure to submit the forms by the following SOLS deadline dates:

  • January 15 for a spring course the next academic year
  • August 15 for a fall course the next academic year

The schedule of classes process works one calendar year in advance. Undergraduate Programs considers the following items as it develops the schedule:

  • The major map of each degree program.
  • Consistent offerings of TEACHing Tier 1, 2 and 3 courses
  • Enrollment projections
  • Student demand

Please contact your Faculty Leader for more information about the process.

Classroom assignments and reservations

ASU classroom

There are two categories of academic classrooms used for SOLS courses:

University-controlled rooms, which must meet a specific meeting pattern. A list of university-controlled rooms on the Room List Spreadsheets via the Astra scheduling website Spreadsheets are available by term. Once the appropriate sheet is selected, be sure to click on the tab for the Tempe campus.

It is recommended that faculty physically visit their classroom space at least two months before the beginning of the term. Should you need assistance with the technology in the room, you can schedule a technology orientation for your classroom with Classroom Support: Classroom.Support@asu.edu.

SOLS-controlled rooms, which are limited in size and availability.

Faculty can check the list of departmentally-controlled rooms on the SOLS Classrooms List . It is also recommended that faculty physically visit their SOLS classroom space at least two months before the beginning of the term.

For access to departmentally-controlled rooms, contact SOLS Facilities

For access to University-controlled rooms, contact rooms@asu.edu or 480-965-6578
